World Sickle Cell Day (and also Juneteenth) is here again, and like every year, people come up with various ways of celebrating and raising awareness. Some wear red, some host workshops, and most get active on social media -- sharing how they've chosen to observe the day. See below for a few of our favorite out-of-the-box ideas:

    A Sweet Salute
They say the way to a person's heart is through their stomach. That's why some warriors and supporters have chosen to educate their communities via baked goodies like these. Like this idea? Check out other options here and here.

    Sickle Cell Series
As a journalist and filmmaker, Wana Udobang helps raise awareness through the stories she tells. For World Sickle Cell Day, she's created a series called "Warriors," which features four video interviews of people living with SCD. Watch the first video below.

    Inspiring Images
Across the pond in London at the University College Hospital MacMillan Cancer Centre, "Seeing Red" -- an exhibition of photos taken by sickle cell warriors -- debuts today. According to UCLH, the photography is the culmination of the work the warriors did during narrative therapy pilot workshops.

'Tis the season for giving, miracles, and making wishes come true. But, organizations such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation and others like it grant the heart's desire of children throughout the year. Read on to learn about some of the many wonder-filled experiences young SCD warriors have received, and perhaps, you'll be inspired to refer a warrior that you know this holiday.

    1) Kevin, 14, wished to be an Air Force pilot.
High altitudes can trigger a crisis, but these wish granters had a solution.

    2) Shannon, 13, wished for a shopping spree.
And it came complete with the red carpet treatment, full makeover, personal shopper, and photo shoot!

    3) Daniel, 12, wished to spend a day with the Steelers, his favorite football team.
"Every member of the Steelers signed his football, and he even posed for pictures with several of the players."

    4) Amir, 9, wished for a trip to Hawaii to see the volcanoes.
"The thing I liked most was the helicopter ride because you could go over a giant mountain and see all these waterfalls and volcanoes.

    5) Breanna, 10, wished for a Yorkie puppy.
"She likes to get rubbed in between her ears and her belly and she likes to be held."

    6) Isatu, 7, wished to be a rock star.
"Singing gets her through the rough times."

  3. 4 Reasons You Can’t Miss the Sickle Cell Warriors Annual Gathering

Back for its second year, the annual Sickle Cell Community Gathering and Educational Symposium hosted by Sickle Cell Warriors will be held in Atlanta, Georgia from July 17 through July 20. Don't wait any longer to grab your tickets, you're not going to want to miss a single second of this retreat! Here are just a few reasons why you've got to make sure you're there:

    1. You'll be empowered. Not that you don't feel empowered to continue this fight of your life already, but the struggle is real. There's nothing like re-energizing those feelings of empowerment by surrounding yourself with people who know exactly what you're going through and can provide support, encouragement, and share methods of coping that have worked for them.

    2. It's a built-in family vacation. Everyone's invited to this gathering -- sickle cell patients, family, friends, caretakers, etc. -- and your digs for the weekend will be the DoubleTree by Hilton Atlanta-Buckhead. This beautiful, newly renovated, eco-friendly hotel is outfitted with lots of amenities and is conveniently located less than ten miles from a variety of must-see sites. During your free time, walk to Lenox Mall (where the celebrities shop) or visit the Georgia Aquiarium; the Martin Luther King, Jr. Historic Site; the World of Coca-Cola; CNN Studios; Centinnial Olympic Park, and so much more!

    3. You'll mingle with royalty. Sickle-cell royalty, that is. On Saturday night, there'll be a formal dinner with a guest speaker, and following the meal, there will be a dance party at which the 2014 Warrior Prince and Princess will be crowned.

    4. You'll Learn Something New. Besides bonding with other members of #TeamSickleCell and enjoying the sites that ATL has to offer, you'll also get to take part in a group outing and educational sessions, as well as visit informational booths that will be set up throughout the conference. You're sure to learn things here that you may not have known before and more knowledge unlocks more power and strength you'll need to continue the battle against SCD.

Are you attending the gathering this year? Tell us in the comments!
